How to Make a Bong

1. Get a pop bottle. Long pop bottles may provide less capacity for water but make the smoke travel slightly little further prior to being inhaled. Fatter or wider pop bottles tend to offer a more capacity for water which provides greater filtration.

2. Buy or make a down-pipe. Bought down-pipes are convenient, and re-usable. Most down-pipes are threaded to allow an accompanying 'bowl' to be screwed on.

3. Hold the pop bottle in up-right position. The next step is to locate a place to insert the down-pipe. Hold and angle the down-pipe so the 'bowl' is pointing upwards and the bottom of the down-pipe will be touching the bottom of the bottle where the water will be on the inside.

4. Once you are satisfied and you have found a good spot to insert the down-pipe, you will have to create a hole for it. Because nearly all pop bottles are made of plastic, the easiest way to mould a hole is to melt the plastic. You should be very careful as heating plastic causes the release of toxic fumes. A metal, circular object such as a screwdriver; can be heated up to a temperature that could penetrate and be pushed into your chosen spot for the down-pipe. Do this in a well ventilated place as mentioned above toxic chemicals can be emitted. With the hot metal screwdriver, widen the hole whic you placed in the pop bottle so it is only slightly larger than the down-pipe itself. Most purchased down-pipes come with a short rubber 'grommet' that creates a rubber seal for the hole in the pop bottle. The down-pipe is inserted through the 'grommet' and into the pop bottle bong. Push the down-pipe down far enough so that the end nearly touches the base of the pop bottle bong.

5. Now that the down-pipe is inserted into the pop bottle you have a basic bong, but a necessary touch is the shotgun hole. A shotgun hole allows the smoker to inhale a whole chamber of smoke, in one lung-full. This just means, to many smokers, that the final lungful is quickly followed by some fresh air inhaled along with the smoke, making the smoke cooler and less harsh. This also ensures you take in all the remaining smoke in the bottle. Before you make your shotgun hole, it is a good idea to look for an ideal, comfortable place to put it. Make sure you place the shotgun hole above where the water sits, if you put it where the water rests, your are going to spill every time, and it will completely take away the point of having one in the first place. Wrap your hand around the bong and see where your fingers rest. Put the shotgun hole wherever you feel comfortable with whichever finger you intend on using it with.
